Scrivia Environment and the Provincial Bird Ringing Center of the Province of Alessandria
Directly from the pen, keyboard, of Fabrizio Silvano the description of how the ringing center "Torrente Scrivia" was born
“Scrivia Stream” Capture and Ringing Centre
In 1990, for the undersigned and Dr. Giovanni Boano, the idea was born to have in the Province of Alessandria a capture and ringing Station for the study of bird migrations.
After a series of careful assessments, the choice of the identified area, which in our view showed interesting features for naturalness, habitat richness and biodiversity, fell on a stretch of the Scrivia Stream located on the right bank between the municipalities of Cassano Spinola and Villalvernia.
In the early years we tried to identify the best and most diverse environments, from the riverbed to the riparian woods, to shrubby areas and dry, uncultivated meadows, while also planning the parameters and methodology to be used.
From 1996 standardized captures began with the “constant effort site” system; this methodology continued until the end of 2014, allowing the capture and checking of over 35,000 birds belonging to 150 different species. From the beginning of 2015, the Capture and Ringing Centre became part of the MonITRing Project coordinated and led by the National Ringing Centre of ISPRA.
For its features, this area has become part of the Natura 2000 Network and the Habitats Directive has identified the conditions to make it a Site of Community Interest (S.C.I.) and a Special Protection Area (S.P.A.)
In this area, up to today, about 35 species of mammals, 250 of birds, 20 including reptiles and amphibians, 25 of fish, as well as several hundred species of insects and over 600 species of vascular plants have been recorded.
Starting this year, 2017, I began attending the bird-ringing center "Torrente Scrivia".
Thanking Fabrizio for giving me this opportunity, I hope to be able to take you through the following pages to a place
where a group of friends give their contribution to research on bird migrations.
The Scrivia Stream seems to be a highway that shows birds one of the routes of their long journey that, every year, they are usually forced to undertake to reach the nesting areas in spring, and then return to their usual sites to winter.
From Passo dei Giovi in the upper Scrivia valley (a very favorable point for migrations), but also from Crocetta d'Orero, from the Creto pass and from the Bocchetta pass, most bird species fly over, descending and climbing again along the Scrivia Stream as a favorable route for their annual movements.
